Zestee Mojito Masala

Havana, Cuba, is the birthplace of the classic & traditional Mojito. The story traces the Mojito to a similar 16th century drink known as “El Draque”, after Sir Francis Drake in 1586, after his successful raid at Cartagena de Indias Drake’s ships sailed towards Havana but there was an epidemic on board. It was known that the local South American Indians had remedies for various tropical illnesses, so a small boarding party went ashore on Cuba and came back with ingredients for an effective medicine. The ingredients were aguardiente de caña mixed with local tropical ingredients: lime and mint. Lime juice on its own significantly prevented epidemic.

Caesar of Hearts occupied an important place during the Moghul era…even the encyclopedia Ain-e-Akbari contains a good account of Mango. The word Mango came after various transpositions as the origin of Mango in India-Burma, the  Sanskrit belt, happened by the name Amra-Phalam, the Tamils calling it Aam Kaay, which gradually became Maamkaay. Malayalis called it maanga. The Portuguese told about this fruit to Britishers, who due to pronunciation differences christened it Mango.

But buddy…what’s in a name?

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet” is a frequently referenced part of William Shakespeare‘s play Romeo and Juliet, in which Juliet seems to argue that it does not matter that Romeo is from her rival’s house of Montague, that is, that he is named “Montague.” The reference is often used to imply that the names of things do not affect what they really are.

Not neurotic about the names Mango is called by, we went ahead and embalmed [read packaged] the symbol of love [remember the story – it goes as a princess got transformed into a mango tree by one enchantress because of her love affair with one prince. The Norse gods owed their immortality to apples. The Arabian Nights features a magic apple from Samarkand capable of curing all human diseases—predating the belief that an apple a day will keep the doctor away, a proverb that first appeared in print in 1866.

The forbidden fruit of Eden in the popular Christian tradition has held that it was an apple that Eve coaxed Adam to share with her. Renaissance painters may also have been influenced by the story of the golden apples in the Garden of Hesperides. As a result, in the story of Adam and Eve, the apple became a symbol for knowledge, immortality, temptation, the fall of man into sin, and sin itself.

Michelangelo’s Temptation and Fall on the Sistine Ceiling features forbidden figs, apples, increasingly, were held responsible for the Fall. By the 17th century, when Milton wrote Paradise Lost, the forbidden fruit was an Apple with a capital A.
